FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK
Some of you visited as Mothers, Grandmothers and Special Aunties for our special morning tea event. There was a real buzz at the College as excited children and grandchildren were eager to welcome you to see their classrooms and help them with their learning activities.
The level of support you gave proved to be the best turn out ever and no doubt the gap of two years since the last one contributed. It was so good to have you back on site and there were even 4 generations present of one family!
A massive thank you to the P&F for the wonderful morning tea provided and we were blessed with a splendid sunny morning which enabled great use of the outside space outside the Junior Primary wing. You moved freely across Primary to engage with your child(ren) in a wide range of activities from cooking, crafts to robotics and to see what great teachers and school support officers we have. It was a very enjoyable morning for all.
Your support is very much appreciated as we work in partnership with you to bring up another generation to learn and appreciate God’s way in an evil and selfish world. These visits along with following us on social media allows you to be more aware of the learning taking place in our student’s learning journeys throughout our community’s school.
Together we work to apply the principle that was given to Israel, to be constant in our instruction of God’s way to our precious children, ‘You shall teach them to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.’ Deut 6 v 7.

Community Feedback
"Having grown up part of Canada Heritage College, it was great to see a school with a similar feel, but so much larger. 100% great job to Captains and Vice Captains Austin and Eden for your informative tour of the College! We loved seeing our friend Caitlin Dodson in action in her class."

Heritage College AGM
This is the annual meeting where 15 stakeholder ecclesias gather to learn about the last year’s performance both operationally and financially and for member ecclesias to be able to raise concerns or ask questions.
This is required as a business as it is the means to hold the College Council (Board) accountable for their stewardship and to elect Council members. Three presentations were given: Operations of the College for 2022 through commentary on a scorecard against the key strategic objectives, Key 2022 financial metrics and their comparison to the previous year and an overview of the key strategic goals for 2023-2025.
Here are some Highlights from these presentations:
- Strength of curriculum delivery and high-quality teaching as validated by NAPLAN and SACE scores of 2022 within our unique supportive environment to make Friends for Life.
- Positive impact of increased deliberate messaging on social media doubled engagement and strengthened our connection with parents.
- Focus on sustainability whilst maintaining the objective of the College being accessible to all Christadelphian families. Heritage College provides exceptional value for money for students and their families.
- No significant capital development has occurred since 2019 but will be a future focus area due to the bulge in student numbers going into Secondary.
- Maintenance of a fee structure that continues to cover costs when combined with government grants.
- Acknowledgement of supportive culture for both staff and students and a continuation of this focus along with digital competence in the 2023-2025 strategic plan.
The voting saw the re-election of Councillors Peter Evans and Joshua Williams and election of new Councillor James Mansfield (Mt Barker) and acknowledgement of Dan Crispin.
The Council indicated that they are always keen to learn of those wishing to get involved in this rewarding work and to provide resilience and depth of skill set to the needs of the business.
Sports Day 2023
Our annual Sports Day was held on Wednesday 5 April, with God’s blessing – a fantastic day of enthusiasm, action and enjoyment! St Albans Oval has had an upgrade since we last used the venue with safety netting around the discus areas.
For the first time our Senior Secondary were able to use spiked shoes in the 100m sprint and high jump, which helped prepare them for the Interschool competition the following week.
We are thankful for our community support for this highlight event, with parents and grandparents and friends all coming to cheer on our students. Special thanks to our wonderful group of P&F Volunteers who ran the Food Stall, helping make the day a special one, as well as raising a fantastic amount for P&F supported projects.
We’re pleased to announce the following results:
House Winner:
Reuben was our overall winning House Team with 3428 points, followed closely by Ephraim with 3122, Dan with 2991 and Judah with 2369. Well done to all our students – every bit of involvement counts!

Interschool Athletics 2023
Heritage College has finally achieved the big double.
1st place in both the girls and boys resulting in a winner take all result in the E1 grade School Athletics Championships, at the SA Athletics Stadium in Mile End.
We have moved up within the grades over the last few years we have competed in the competition and now look likely to be promoted to D grade.
The grade levels are more indicative of size and sustained performances from schools over many years as within each grade level there are excellent performances form students.
Our students’ strengths are their team spirit and “give it a go” attitude as well as some dedicated training in PE lessons and Friday sport opportunities.
Students have become a cohesive and successful team who now feel more comfortable with the competitive environment of the Athletic sports field. They have grown as a group as older members now take it upon themselves to help and encourage younger ones in events during the day and during Friday training sessions.
A highlight was the team relays where students performed outstandingly to win the coveted 4x 100 m finals in girls U/13 59.07 BOYS U/16 51.31 OPEN BOYS 47.75 !

The Resilience Project for Primary
After School Soccer
During Term 2, primary students from Foundation to Year 6 are involved in Friday After-School soccer clinics from 3.30pm – 4.30pm. These are run by Football SA, and they provide their own coaches. As this program has been running for a few years now, a number of coaches have got to know our students, and this has helped to foster a positive rapport throughout the various groups. Each coach has a set routine of drills and during the session, the groups rotate through the coaches to gain maximum benefit from the drills and skills on offer. Some mini matches are also included. Thank you, parents, for being organised in time to register your child so that this program can be successful. If you would like to register your child, it’s not too late. Please contact the front desk at Heritage for information, as there are still six sessions left. - Brett Arnold
Miss Fit Movement - Brett Arnold
During the first three weeks of Term 2, all primary students were involved in the MisFit movement program in the gym organised by Uncle Ben Curtin. This involved yoga in Week 1, aerobics in Week 2 and dance in Week 3. The students moved with the music, and by watching the instructor’s every move, were able to keep up with her. It proved to be very tyring, but also very satisfying for each student, knowing that they had achieved their goal of completing each session successfully.
Lower Primary - Leeanne Clark

Our Spiritual theme in Primary for Term 2 is: ‘Lessons from Nature’. The Year 1/2 class have enjoyed creating some lovely pieces of artwork related to our weekly topics! “They are like trees that grow beside a stream, that bear fruit at the right time, and whose leaves do not dry up. They succeed in everything they do.” Psalm 1:3
“I may have all knowledge and understanding; I may have all the faith needed to move mountains, but if I have not love, I am nothing.” 1 Corinthians 13: 2
Middle Primary - Jordan Morrison
We all love our mums and this term we have the perfect chance to celebrate and thank them for everything they do for us. We had a lot of fun making and creating some treats for mum, while performing our Readers Theatre and playing some board games. Thank you to all our amazing Mums, Aunties, Gran’s, Nana’s and Grandma’s.
Upper Primary - Jason Hauser
Bible Study: Developing a Framework for Understanding God's Story – Year 5/6JH
There are many opportunities to incorporate the Bible into our daily classroom activities. Upper primary students know so many important characters and great stories from the Bible and these can be used and shared in a variety of ways to enrich our learning.
One of the most important lessons we have learned is the significance of approaching the Bible as the Word of God. Students have also discovered methods to memorise verses and have experimented with various ways to meditate on important passages, such as the ‘7 Minutes with God’ technique.
Recently, we have been trying to gain a sense of the Bible as a whole to better understand God’s overall plan and purpose – His-story, so to speak. Students have explored how the characters and stories of the Bible fit into God’s timeline from Creation to the establishment of His kingdom on earth. As a visual aid, we have created a timeline on butcher’s paper which extends the whole width of our classroom (shown below), and students have placed key characters and stories on the timeline where they belong, from the ancient past to our present time and beyond into the future.
Having a framework such as this to make sense of the Bible and fit its parts into a larger context has been a helpful and valuable learning experience.
Lower Secondary - Kirsty Palmer
It has been so fun to dive into the Secondary Musical. We have been having weekly rehearsals in Friday sport time and we have just started learning choreography at the offsite dance studio. This term we have also begun our afterschool rehearsals, where our committed students will be staying at school until 5pm each Friday to work on their parts. Our senior secondary students have taken on a fantastic leadership role and regularly lead the cast warm ups and help their younger cast mates practice their parts.
Things have also been happening backstage, our talented year 11 Creative Arts students have been working on many different props, costumes, poster designs, makeup designs, wig making and marketing plans. The hard working committee has also been getting into the thick of it, these days if you walk into the music room at lunchtimes, you’ll probably find Kirsty sewing some sort of costume.
Even this far away from our production we have had many parent volunteers help with various things and we’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who has donated their time and abilities. Particularly to Tim Hornhardt who came and helped our Morris Men conquer their dancing skills, and Ilana Evans and Lisa Hummel who sewed on the badges (designed by Adrian Petiet) of our beautiful new musical jumpers.
We are particularly looking for some more volunteers who can sew! If you can help alter some existing costumes, or follow a pattern, please email Kirsty on kpalmer@heritage.sa.edu.au and she will gratefully put you to work.
Check out these photos of what we have been working on and stay tuned for the announcement of ticket sales.

Student Representative Council (SRC)
The Student Representative Council (SRC) has commenced the school year with some energy and enthusiasm to make a difference to the school experience of fellow students at Heritage College. Some of the things that we have been busy doing during the first Term of 2023 include:
Fund-raising and events
We held a whole-of-school fundraiser activity was held on 24th March 2023 for the Brethren and Sisters affected by the earthquake. Approximately $3200 was collected over a weeklong effort and a one-off cupcake sale. The funds were gratefully received by the Christadelphian Refugee Assistance Council (Secretary - Bro Gary Hindmarsh, NSW).
We also held a competition for Rubik’s Cube enthusiasts during Term 1.
Maintenance and grounds
We supported the purchase of large storage boxes to house play equipment for the courtyard area, including an outdoor chess set, and arranged for netting to be installed in the courtyard areas around the table tennis area to stop balls escaping under the buildings.
We raised the need to improve the quality and taste of water coming out of the drinking fountain in the primary and courtyard areas of the school – which is much better now!
Student issues
We asked for the role and value of the Primary Buddy Bench to be highlighted to all teachers; and arranged for access to be granted to known Spotify accounts for Year 11 & 12 students to listen to music while studying.
We have a few events and activities planned for the remainder of the school year include:
- Term 2 - a promotional activity for the Heritage College musical (Chitty Chitty Bang Bang) – with an old-fashioned themed dress up for students and several musical related activities.
- Term 3 - A whole-of-school fun activity to raise funds for the purchase of Heritage College equipment.
We thank all our Primary and Secondary students and School Captains / Vice-Captains for their time, effort, ideas, and contributions to the Student Representative Council.

Upper Secondary - Danielle Smith
For the last week, Year 8 Home Group has been looking into some prophecies, particularly comparing Daniel 2 and Daniel 7. We have learned about what the 4 beasts stand for and how the characteristics predicted by the scripture have come true. We also noted that Daniel 2 is the human view of the Kingdoms of Men but that the beasts of Chapter 7 show that God’s view of human activity is far different.
Upper Secondary - Julie Samuel
Year 9’s have been learning about the acid and bases and did a fun experiment to understand the concept. Here are some students making a cabbage indicator
The Year 11 students have been learning about the physical and chemical properties of various substances. They used this knowledge to design an experiment to remove either coffee or turmeric stains from a material and set the variables accordingly. It was a huge learning curve for them as they had to not only come up with the method but also with the safety precautions and have to take into consideration all the variables that might affect their results. Overall, it was fun and students learned a lot about the outworking of bleach.
Upper Secondary - Amy Flood
Term 2 is off to an indulgent start in the Home Economics room! Year 9 and 10 Food Innovation students have created sumptuous Miniature Desserts, designed to showcase Australian ingredients. The brief was met through the incorporation of native ingredients such as Wattle Seed and Riberries, and quintessential Aussie products, including TimTams, Fantales, Jaffas and Arnott’s biscuits.
Working in pairs, they collaborated to adapt existing recipes to meet the brief, producing and presenting ten miniature serves with sophistication. The photos speak for themselves of the high standard of work produced, but perhaps the best feedback is from staff and students, who, upon entering the Home Ec. Room, always demand to know ‘what is that amazing smell?!’

Student Wellbeing
Emotional Literacy
In Homegroup during The Resilience Project lessons, students have been engaged in activities and discussions that help them identify, prioritise, and label emotions. Students brainstormed all the ways they feel emotions, such as heart beating fast, stomach feeling tight, etc. wrote down what each emotion feels like in their body and a time when they have felt it.
If we learn to pay attention to how we feel when we are experiencing emotions, we can identify which parts of the body are being impacted, and with practice, use these cues in our body to help us understand and cope with different life situations.
